Early Signs of Autism: What Parents Should Know
Every child develops at their own pace, and small differences are often nothing to worry about. But in some cases, early challenges in communication, behavior, or play may be signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
At the Children’s Wellness & Developmental Center, we believe that early awareness leads to early support—and that can make a big difference in a child’s development.
What Is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a child interacts, communicates, and processes the world around them. Because autism exists on a spectrum, signs can look different from one child to the next.
Some children may show signs in the first year of life, while others may develop typically for a time and then begin to show differences around 18–24 months.
Common Early Signs of Autism
Below are some early indicators that may appear in infants and toddlers. While not all children will display every sign, noticing several of these behaviors—especially if they persist—may warrant a developmental evaluation.
Social and Communication Differences
•Limited eye contact
•Not responding to name by 12 months
•Lack of pointing, waving, or using gestures
•Delayed speech or language development
•Not showing interest in other people (e.g., not sharing toys or smiling socially)
Behavior and Play Patterns
•Repetitive movements (rocking, hand-flapping, spinning)
•Unusual attachment to routines or resistance to change
•Intense interest in specific objects or topics
•Limited pretend or imaginative play
•Overreacting or underreacting to sounds, textures, or lights
Developmental Red Flags
•Loss of previously acquired speech or social skills
•Delayed motor development (e.g., sitting, crawling, walking)
•Preference for playing alone over engaging with others
